Wedding Champagne Spray – How to Plan for the Best

Wedding Champagne Spray Photography

You may be asking yourself, “What is a wedding champagne spray?”  Well, it’s awesome, is what it is.

This type of photo became a thing in the wedding photography world years ago.  We simply love it.  Why?  Here’s a few reasons:

  • It’s easy.  Unlike say, a sparkler exit, all it requires is a couple bottles of champagne and a big enough spot to spray.
  • It’s fun.  Every time we do it, I laugh SO hard when the champagne comes out.
  • It’s a cool release.  We do a lot of night time ones and it is really fun to do this during the reception. It’s a great way to let go of any stress of the day.
  • It’s fast.  Champagne only sprays for few seconds.  So it doesn’t take you away from your wedding for more than five minutes.  Possibly ten if you’re including more people.

We are going to share some tips here with you about how to make the best of these awesome photos.  Here are some questions we often get when it comes to these photos.

What kind of champagne should we use?

Yes, this is the top question we get.  In the end, IT DOESN’T MATTER.  Buy the cheapest stuff, unless you don’t like drinking it.  There will be champagne left over to drink at the end.  So if you want to drink the leftovers, just get your favorite cheap champagne.

How much should we get?

This is one we emphasize.  Always get at least two bottles per person spraying.  Why?  You’re not going to do it right the first time.  Plus, the more photos you get, the better on this type of shot.  If we have a couple spraying one bottle, we always recommend getting two bottles.  Some of our couples do wedding party ones. We had a wedding last year where they sprayed twelve bottles because the wedding party were involved.  Always get at least two.

When do we do the spray photo?

One thing is for sure – ALWAYS after the ceremony.  We have had some people do it during cocktail hour or sunset. But we also have a lot of clients that do night time ones as well.  In that case we do the night time one during the reception dancing time or right before we leave for the night.

Does my venue allow this?

We do not know.  You have to ask your venue.  Don’t ever assume.  We don’t assume, even if we have shot there before because there are always updates to rules.  ASK YOUR VENUE.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • You will get wet.
    • People are often surprised by this.  But yes, you will get wet and sticky.  I had to have our clothes dry cleaned after a spray last year.  I also was driving around the week after a wedding and noticed my shoes were still sticky from champagne.  This is why we always do them after the ceremony.
  • Listen to your photographer.
    • Champagne sprays are really fun and often times people like to video them or watch.  That’s totally fine.  If we are doing your shot however, you have to listen to us.  Why?  It goes SO fast!  It’s one of those things where if you don’t do what we ask you to do when we ask, it’s over.
  • Ask your venue.
    • We like to reiterate this one.  It’s the most important thing because it is their property.

Overall, these photos are really fun.  You’ll never see people in these types of photos that are not smiling and laughing.  Add one to your day!
